What is this place?

That’s a fair question and one that seems to be constantly changing. I, Nancy, grew up on a farm in northwest Iowa. That farm was always filled with family and friends who came to celebrate the important moments in life: the 4th of July, family reunions and Sunday dinners. I grew up surrounded by my siblings and cousins fishing down by the creek, having bottle rocket fights, and playing kick the can until it got dark. The farm was a place where memories were made. That is what I want for everyone who visits here (except for the bottle rocket fights—those were dangerous). Meet the animals, walk around, grab a beverage, enjoy the South Dakota prairie.

The Good Earth is a working farm. We use sustainable practices to grow vegetables that are sold through our farm stand. We take care of animals that are the life of this place. In 2022 we purchased two woodfired pizza ovens which allows us to create a true farm to table experience.

Nancy grows the ingredients that top the pizzas. Other ingredients are sourced from local growers including the wheat used to make our crusts.

Jeff and Nancy Kirstein

Jeff and Nancy are both USD grads and have called South Dakota home for more than twenty years. In 2009 they decided to sell everything and hit the high seas on a classic Hans Christian 34ft sailboat. They floated around in Mexico for about a year, eating fresh food and enjoying their time outside. Life on the sea was great, but they missed being part of a community. Upon their return to South Dakota, they decided to become vegetables farmers. Since April of 2011 they have lived on the farm learning lessons the hard way through laughter, heartache, and most importantly, the community that they were looking for.

A little bit about us.

Nancy

Farmer. Event Planner. Caretaker of Animals.

The farm is Nancy’s dream come true. It combines everything that she loves: bringing people together, taking care of the animals, growing food, and educating people of all ages. She loves sharing the farm, which is why you will almost always find her smiling.

Jeff

Cook. Social Media Influencer. Repair Man.

Jeff has a job off of the farm, but he does find time to cook the most amazing farm meals and take the most beautiful photos of the place. In his spare time he fixes everything that gets broken during the week.
